As has been widely reported, police in Avon & Somerset (including Bristol) and Durham have stopped arresting people for carrying personal amounts of drugs. I write to ask you to instruct the Met police to implement a similar policy.
As one senior police officer told VICE: "I fail to understand why anyone caught with a small amount of drugs should face seven years in prison. It doesn't solve the problem of why they have that drug in the first place and we don't have the time of day to help them if they need it... criminalising people for drug possession is counter-productive."
